Integrity of the design and dedication to the craft are at the heart of designer Jen Kao’s womenswear line, launched in fall 2007. Each piece is a work of art; an intricate composition of luxurious fabrics and inspired thinking. Often, opposing elements are woven together: a feminine fluidity is imbued with a rough-and-tumble spirit; a sense of sophistication infused with street or sportif touches. The result is a collection both complex and immensely versatile; a collection that effortlessly allows one-of-a-kind aesthetic.
Details--whether it is the hand pleated piping on a design, or an exquisite lining stitched inside – are of the utmost importance to Kao. As is functionality, many of her pieces can be played with, elements slightly adjusted, to change shape along with the wearers moods. They are pieces that speak to forward-thinking women with a cultivated sense of style.
Born in Los Angeles, raised in Kansas City, and based in New York, Kao received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Studio Arts at NYU, followed by a post-graduate degree from Parsons School of Design. She went to work for several reputable designers before launching her own label. But, perhaps more than any formal education or training, it is her family that inspires Kao and informs her collection. In particular, her grandmother, who was born and raised in Taiwan under Japanese influence. From her, Kao learned the traditional crafts, artistry, and folklore of Japanese culture. As well as an intense love for details and precision.
